The techniques a show uses to make meaning — camera, editing, sound, graphics, mise-en-scène and narrative. The big idea: reality television is constructed, even when it looks raw.

How to use a technique in the exam

Never just name a technique. Always: technique → effect → genre significance. "There is a close-up" earns nothing. "The extreme close-up on cracked hands works as visual proof of authentic hardship, a code the genre relies on" earns marks.

The analytical lens: naming vs explaining

This is the single widest gap between an Achieved answer and an Excellence one. Naming treats the media product as passive documentation and says nothing about the audience relationship. Explaining decodes how the technique manufactures emotional stakes and narrative meaning.

The aerial shot

“The director uses a wide aerial shot.”

Absence of music

✗ Naming — the what

“There is no music in this scene.”

Notices an absence without recognising that the absence was authored — silence is a decision, not a gap.

✓ Explaining — the why

“Withholding the score removes the audience's emotional safety net, so a noise outside the shelter arrives as unmediated threat rather than as a scored set piece the music has already told us how to feel about.”

The confessional

✗ Naming — the what

“The contestant speaks to camera about their plan.”

Treats confessional speech as unmediated truth rather than as selected, repositioned material.

“The confessional is cut in after the fact, so it manufactures dramatic irony: the audience is given motives the other contestants cannot hear, converting camp logistics into psychological drama.”

The day counter

“A graphic says 'Day 39'.”

Reads on-screen text as neutral information rather than as a dramatic device.

“The counter converts duration into a scoreboard, structuring a formless wilderness experience into narrative chapters and reminding the audience of accumulating physical and mental cost.”

Cross-cutting

✗ Naming — the what

“The show cuts between two teams.”

Describes the edit without naming the suspense it fabricates.

“Cross-cutting Team A freezing in their sleeping bags with Team B trekking through the woods to steal those exact sleeping bags collides two separate spaces into one apparent present, cueing the audience to anticipate a conflict the participants do not yet know is coming.”

Camera

Establishing / aerial shot

Camera

A wide shot that sets location, scale and relationships.

Across texts: In Alone a drone pulls straight up and away from a solitary shelter until the contestant is a speck; in Outlast wide drone shots sweep the Alaskan terrain, mapping the hostile distance between rival camps.
Effect: Minimises the subject against the landscape, constructing a visual metaphor for human vulnerability and isolating the viewer alongside the contestant.
Genre significance: Constructs nature as vast and hostile — a core survival convention.
Common mistake: Just naming the shot without saying what meaning it builds.
Exam-ready claim: "The aerial establishing shot is a shared convention that frames wilderness as antagonist across the genre."

Self-shot / handheld footage

Camera

Footage filmed by the contestant or with deliberately rough handheld camerawork.

Across texts: Alone is built on self-filming; Outlast mixes some self-captured moments into crew footage.
Effect: Signals immediacy and 'unstaged' truth; draws the viewer into the contestant's experience.
Genre significance: An authenticity code that hides, rather than removes, construction.
Common mistake: Treating self-shot footage as proof the show is unedited.

Editing

Cross-cutting

Editing

Cutting between two or more simultaneous strands.

Across texts: Outlast cross-cuts between teams; Alone cross-cuts between isolated contestants who never meet.
Effect: Builds comparison, rivalry and suspense.
Genre significance: Constructs relationships and competition the contestants may not have experienced together.
Common mistake: Confusing cross-cutting with a simple cut or flashback.
Exam-ready claim: "Cross-cutting manufactures rivalry, showing how editing constructs the genre's competition."

Withholding & the cliffhanger

Editing

Delaying an outcome to create suspense and drive retention.

Across texts: Survivor withholds vote results; Outlast cuts away before confrontations resolve.
Effect: Keeps viewers watching across breaks or episodes.
Genre significance: Links editing directly to commercial retention, especially in streaming.
Common mistake: Calling any tense moment a cliffhanger; it must withhold resolution.
Exam-ready claim: "Withholding is an editing convention that serves commercial retention, intensified by binge platforms."

The confessional cutaway

Editing

Splicing a post-event interview over footage of the event itself, so a contestant narrates action the audience is watching.

Across texts: Survivor lays post-event interviews over camp life to explain hidden tribal politics; Outlast lets players justify sabotage directly to camera, away from the ears of their team.
Effect: Manufactures dramatic irony and internal monologue. The audience hears motives that the other contestants cannot.
Genre significance: Transforms physical survival logistics into psychological drama — the mechanism by which 'people gathering firewood' becomes a story about betrayal.
Common mistake: Treating the confessional as something that happened at that moment. It is a separate recording, cut in later, chosen from many takes.
Exam-ready claim: "The confessional cutaway converts survival logistics into psychological drama by granting the audience knowledge the contestants are denied."

Time compression

Editing

Condensing hours or days of raw footage into a short broadcast sequence. The ratio is enormous — days of material become minutes of screen time — though the exact figure is never published and varies by sequence.

Across texts: Survivor compresses an excruciating multi-hour endurance challenge into a rapid sequence; Alone montages several days of starvation, boredom and repetitive tasks into a sixty-second run of physical decay.
Effect: Eliminates the true tedium of survival and constructs a heightened, relentless reality in which crisis and resolution arrive at a digestible pace.
Genre significance: The genre's central paradox: the thing being sold as 'real' is precisely the thing that has been removed. Real survival is mostly waiting.
Common mistake: Describing a montage without naming what the compression conceals — the boredom, the repetition, the hours where nothing happens.
Exam-ready claim: "Time compression removes the tedium that defines actual survival, so the genre's authenticity claim depends on editing out the most authentic thing in the footage."

Sound

Confessional / video diary

Sound

Direct-to-camera speech revealing thoughts, motives and judgement.

Across texts: Survivor uses interview confessionals; Alone uses self-recorded video diaries.
Effect: Supplies narrative, builds parasocial intimacy and steers audience judgement.
Genre significance: A near-universal convention that lets producers shape meaning while appearing to let contestants speak.
Common mistake: Treating confessional speech as unmediated truth.
Exam-ready claim: "The confessional is a shared convention through which producers narrate and judge while seeming to step back."

Non-diegetic score & music as moral framing

Sound

Added music that signals emotion and moral position.

Across texts: Ominous cues mark a 'villain' in Outlast; tense underscoring builds dread before a tap-out in Alone.
Effect: Tells the audience how to feel and whom to condemn or admire.
Genre significance: Music does moral work the footage alone cannot, shaping audience response.
Common mistake: Ignoring sound because it is less visible than image.
Exam-ready claim: "Non-diegetic score frames moral judgement, showing how sound constructs the audience's verdict."

Silence and diegetic weather

Sound

Deliberately withholding the musical score so that environmental sound — wind, breathing, animals — dominates the mix.

Across texts: Alone routinely drops the score entirely, leaving breathing, wind and whatever is moving outside the shelter; Outlast lets un-scored Alaskan wind dominate the mix over a freezing camp.
Effect: Immersive environmental threat. Removing the safety net of a score forces the viewer to experience unmediated isolation.
Genre significance: Proves that the absence of a technique is itself a technique. Silence is an authored choice with a calculated effect.
Common mistake: Only analysing sound when there is music. The decision not to score a scene is as constructed as the decision to score it.
Exam-ready claim: "Withholding the score is an authenticity convention: silence removes the audience's emotional safety net and simulates unmediated experience."

Graphics

Graphics & data as an authenticity code

Graphics

On-screen text: day counts, weather, maps, rules, vote/elimination graphics.

Across texts: Alone's 'Day 50' counters; Survivor's vote graphics and challenge rules.
Effect: Lends documentary credibility and clarifies stakes.
Genre significance: Data is used as proof of realness — itself a constructed convention.
Common mistake: Assuming on-screen data is neutral information.
Exam-ready claim: "Day-count and weather graphics function as authenticity codes, not neutral facts."

The day counter

Graphics

A recurring on-screen stamp marking elapsed days, usually placed at a cut or after a fade to black.

Across texts: Survivor's 'Day 39' stamp marks the end of the classic format — and the fact that the seasons filmed from 2021 run only 26 days shows how much narrative weight that single number was carrying. Alone's day count rises without limit, appearing as the camera cuts to a visibly thinner contestant.
Effect: Acts as a visual metric of decay and achievement, structuring a shapeless wilderness experience into narrative chapters.
Genre significance: Turns duration itself into the scoreboard. In a genre with no points, the number of days survived is the score.
Common mistake: Reading the counter as neutral information rather than as a dramatic device placed at a chosen moment for a chosen effect.
Exam-ready claim: "The day counter converts endurance into a scoreboard, giving a formless experience the chapter structure a television narrative requires."

On-screen data as proof

Graphics

Quantified overlays — temperatures, calorie deficits, maps, distances — laid over the image.

Across texts: Outlast uses animated mapping graphics showing overnight temperature drops; Alone layers caloric-deficit readouts — calories burned against calories eaten — over a starving contestant.
Effect: Provides omniscient context. Visuals alone cannot convey temperature or a calorie deficit; the graphic translates subjective suffering into objective, life-or-death stakes.
Genre significance: Borrows the authority of measurement. Numbers read as scientific fact, which makes them one of the genre's most persuasive authenticity codes.
Common mistake: Assuming a number on screen is verified. The show selects which figures to display and never shows the ones that would undercut the drama.
Exam-ready claim: "Quantified overlays borrow the authority of measurement, converting invisible hardship into apparently objective proof of danger."

Mise-en-scène

Mise-en-scène: bodies, tools, fire, food

Mise-en-scène

Everything arranged within the frame: bodies, clothing, shelter, tools, fire, food.

Across texts: Visible weight loss in Alone; shared fire and shelter signalling team identity in Outlast.
Effect: Communicates hardship, competence and group/individual status.
Genre significance: Physical decline becomes proof of authentic hardship; objects mark roles.
Common mistake: Describing what's on screen without reading its meaning.
Exam-ready claim: "Bodily decline as mise-en-scène operates as visual proof of authenticity."

Narrative construction

Narrative construction: winner's arc & exit arc

Narrative construction

Shaping contestants into arcs (hero, villain, underdog, winner, exit).

Across texts: Survivor's 'winner's edit'; Outlast's saboteur arc; Alone's competent-loner arc.
Effect: Directs whom the audience roots for, judges or mourns.
Genre significance: Reality is narrativised; character is constructed, not transparently revealed.
Common mistake: Confusing the constructed arc with what 'really' happened.
Exam-ready claim: "Editing builds winner and exit arcs, demonstrating that survival 'character' is constructed."

What the edit removes

Time compression is the quietest and most powerful convention in the genre. Real survival is mostly waiting — and waiting is the first thing cut.

The genre's paradox: the most authentic thing in the footage — tedium — is the first thing cut.

The media stack

Every layer is authored. The audience only ever sees the top plate.

Raw footage on its own means nothing: a human in the woods. Meaning is applied in layers, and all of them arrive at once. Camera decides how vulnerable the subject looks. Editing decides what sits next to what. Sound decides how we feel before we have decided anything. Graphics decide what the stakes are.

Survival reality is never just recorded; it is written. Master the vocabulary of the edit bay and you master the illusion of the wild.
