Theory is useful only when it helps explain evidence and strengthens an argument. Every card below shows the difference between name-dropping a theory and applying it.

The name-drop detector

Compare these two. "Neale said genres use repetition and difference." earns nothing — no text, no application. "Repetition (the prize, the confessional) is preserved while difference concentrates in how you are eliminated" earns marks, because the theory does work on evidence. Every card flags both.

Repetition and difference · Steve Neale

Core

What it says

Genres work by balancing repetition (familiar conventions) with difference (variation), so audiences get both recognition and novelty.

In plain English

We watch for what we expect — and for what's new enough to surprise us.

Applied to each text

Survivor: Keeps confessionals, challenges and Tribal Council (repetition) while changing casts, twists and locations (difference).
Alone: Keeps the survival prize and hardship (repetition) but removes voting and adds self-filming (difference).

What it says

Producers encode a preferred meaning; audiences decode it as dominant, negotiated or oppositional readings.

In plain English

The makers build in a meaning, but viewers can read it their own way.

Survivor: A 'villain' edit encodes condemnation; some fans negotiate it as smart strategy.
Alone: Encodes admiration for endurance; an oppositional reading sees manufactured suffering.
Outlast: Encodes a moral verdict on saboteurs; viewers split over who to blame — the player or the rules.

Core

What it says

No single text carries every defining feature of a genre. Texts share overlapping traits, like members of a family. Some are prototypical (the standard case); others sit fuzzily at the edge.

In plain English

Genres aren't a checklist. Shows resemble each other the way relatives do — no two share every feature.

Applied to each text

Survivor: The prototype: if you had to point at one text and say 'that is survival reality competition', this is it.
Alone: Shares hardship, prize and confessional — but drops the vote, the host and the other contestants entirely.
Outlast: Fuzzy at the edge: it restores competitors and social strategy, but hybridises them with Alone's lethal environment.

Helps explain

Why Alone still counts as the same genre as Survivor despite sharing almost none of its competition structure.

Limitations

Can be used to dodge definition altogether — you still have to say which traits matter most and why.

Core

What it says

“Every text participates in one or several genres, there is no genreless text; there is always a genre and genres, yet such participation never amounts to belonging.” A text carries a mark of genre — but marking itself as belonging is not the same as being contained.

In plain English

Genre isn't a box a show sits inside. It's one or more codes a show takes part in, and an instruction to the viewer about how to read it.

Applied to each text

Survivor: Participates simultaneously in game show, soap opera and travel documentary; the torch and the vote are marks, not membership.
Alone: Participates in observational documentary and in reality competition at once, which is precisely what its authenticity claim exploits.
Outlast: Participates in survival, social-strategy drama and something close to a morality play — a text can do all three at once.

Helps explain

Why hybrids are normal rather than exceptional, and why arguing over which box a show 'belongs in' is the wrong question.

Limitations

Highly abstract, and often mis-paraphrased as 'a text cannot belong to a genre'. Derrida's point is narrower: participation is universal and plural, but it never becomes containment. Only useful if you convert it into a claim about a specific convention.

The economy of genre · Steve Neale (1980)

Core

What it says

Genre is a commercial feedback loop. The industry produces texts with recognisable codes; audiences expect a specific experience; the text fulfils and slightly tweaks that expectation; the pleasure reinforces demand.

In plain English

Studios cut risk by making what worked before. Audiences cut risk by choosing what they already know they like.

Applied to each text

Survivor: More than twenty-five years of the same syntactic loop with new casts and locations: maximum repetition, controlled difference.
Alone: Difference is deliberately concentrated in one place — remove the other contestants — while the prize and the confessional stay.
Outlast: The tweak is a single rule (you must be on a team). One structural difference is enough to sell a whole format as new.

Helps explain

Why genre change is 'controlled innovation' rather than either pure repetition or genuine invention — and why the risk-averse 2026 commissioning climate produces more survival and true crime, not less.

Limitations

Describes the mechanism, not which specific innovations will land with audiences. Neale's own phrasing is worth keeping exact: “difference is absolutely essential to the economy of genre” (Neale 1980).

Useful

What it says

Genres can be analysed by their visible elements (semantic), their structures/relationships (syntactic), and how industries and audiences use them (pragmatic).

In plain English

Look at the props, then the rules connecting them, then how people actually use the label.

Applied to each text

Survivor: Semantic: torches, challenges. Syntactic: alliance-vote logic. Pragmatic: a marketable franchise brand.
Alone: Semantic: self-shot cameras, traps. Syntactic: solitary endurance to last-standing. Pragmatic: an 'authentic' niche.
Outlast: Semantic: teams, wilderness. Syntactic: forced cooperation + rival failure. Pragmatic: a streaming hybrid.

Documentary uses recognisable modes (e.g. observational, participatory) that signal different relationships to 'truth'.

In plain English

There are different documentary 'styles', and each makes its own claim about being real.

Alone: Borrows an observational/self-documentary look to claim minimal interference.
Survivor: Uses a participatory, hosted mode that openly shapes events.
Outlast: Mixes observational hardship with constructed, interview-driven framing.

Why some survival shows feel more 'documentary' and therefore more authentic.

Limitations

Avoid forcing an exact mode label where it doesn't fit; these are reality TV, not pure documentary.

What it says

Genre is not a text format but a “typified rhetorical action” grounded in recurrent social situations. It sits between the creator (encoding), the audience (decoding) and the social context. From “Genre as Social Action”, Quarterly Journal of Speech, 1984.

In plain English

A genre is a shared agreement about how to communicate a particular kind of message in a particular moment.

Applied to each text

Survivor: Responds to a turn-of-the-millennium appetite for watching strangers negotiate coalitions in public.
Alone: Responds to a recurring situation: media-literate viewers who no longer trust polished production and want proof.
Outlast: Responds to a fragmented, argumentative online public that treats moral judgement of strangers as entertainment.

Why the same conventions mean different things in different decades — and why 'the zeitgeist' can be turned into an actual argument.

What it says

“There are no undisputed ‘maps’ of the system of genres within any medium.” One critic's sub-genre is another's main genre. Classification is useful but always contested, and over-classification has costs: homogenised output, complex works forced into simplistic marketing boxes, and algorithmic echo chambers.

In plain English

Genre maps are arguments, not facts — and the tidier the map, the more it distorts.

Applied to each text

Survivor: Is it a game show with a wilderness setting, or a survival show with a game? Both readings are defensible, and each changes the evidence you would select.
Alone: Sits between observational documentary and reality competition; where you place it decides whether its authenticity claim is credible.
Outlast: Marketed as survival, structured as social strategy — the taxonomy dispute is doing commercial work.

Why you can score highly by arguing for a classification rather than assuming one.

Limitations

Don't use it to avoid taking a position — the exam rewards a defended claim, not fence-sitting.

Intertextuality · Julia Kristeva; developed by Roland Barthes

What it says

Meaning is constructed through a text's relationship to other texts, not through its relationship to lived reality. We recognise a situation because we have seen it in other media, not because it happens to us. Kristeva coined the term in the late 1960s, drawing on Bakhtin; Barthes developed it into a theory of reading.

In plain English

We read shows through other shows. The reference points are media, not life.

Applied to each text

Survivor: The tribal council ceremony borrows its authority from ritual, courtroom drama and the game-show reveal.
Alone: The self-shot diary reads as 'true' because found-footage horror and vlogging trained us to read shaky, low-light image as unmediated.
Outlast: Critics reached repeatedly for Lord of the Flies and The Hunger Games to describe it — comparisons that arrive before any judgement of the players themselves.

Genre pleasure operates on three levels: cognitive (problem-solving and prediction), emotional (safely experiencing intense feeling), and social (belonging to an interpretive community).

We watch to work things out, to feel things safely, and to have something to argue about with other people.

Survivor: Cognitive dominates — predicting the vote before the reveal is the core pleasure.
Alone: Emotional dominates — dread, admiration and the vicarious ache of hunger and cold.
Outlast: Social dominates — the moral verdict is delivered collectively, online, after the episode.

Why three shows in one genre attract measurably different audiences, and why each needs a different marketing strategy.

The three overlap constantly; use it to weight an argument, not to sort viewers into boxes.
