  1. 1. What is a media genre?

    A genre is a system of shared expectations, conventions, production choices and audience knowledge. Genres aren't fixed boxes — they repeat recognisable features but also change. A genre lives across the text, its audience, and the industry.

  2. 2. Why is 'reality television' too broad?

    Reality TV covers dating shows, talent contests, renovation shows and much more. For 91251 you need a narrow genre. Ours is survival reality competition — real people enduring hostile environments inside a constructed competition.

  3. 3. Why are these three shows the same genre?

    Survivor, Alone and Outlast all place real participants in hostile environments, with restricted resources, a constructed competition, and success decided by endurance, elimination or outlasting others. They differ in how — and that difference is what we study.

  4. 4. What are the three strands?

    Change (how and why the genre evolves), Audience (what viewers expect and how they respond), and Commercial considerations (how money, platforms and risk shape the genre). The exam rewards one of these aspects.

    A clear stance on a statement, thematic paragraphs that use more than one text, carefully selected evidence, explicit causal reasoning, and — for Excellence — examined implications and a nuanced conclusion.

The distinction that wins marks

Examiners repeatedly penalise students who confuse a product (Survivor) or a franchise (all the Survivor versions) with a genre (survival reality competition). Get this right and you're already ahead.
